The Sega Dreamcast is a 128-bit console produced by Sega, Videologic, Yamaha, Hitachi and Microsoft. The Dreamcast can support four controllers, has an integral 56.6 Kbps modem, and an innovative visual memory PDA card that slots into the top of the controller. The machine can translate 3 million polygons per second, has a 64-channel sound system and a customised version of Windows CE.
Overall a great machine and perhaps the most underrated console ever.
The dreamcast uses a customized Sega OS. It was able to run a custom flavor of Microsoft Windows CE, and will display the official WinCE logo at startup if the game that's running utilizes it. (eg. Sega Rally) Most games however didn't use this flavor.
The CD-ROM Drive uses a proprietary Yamaha GD-ROM (Gigabyte Disc) format capable of holding up to 1GB of data.
Believing the dreamcast was not hackable a group called Utopia released a boot-cd which was able to boot copied games. All later copied games were 'self-bootable' and no boot-cd was necessary.
This hack triggered many people to start developing software for the dreamcast. This resulted in MP3-players, emulators, games, etc.
Another unique feature of the dreamcast were the memory units (VMU). By connecting 2 VMU's together it was possible to exchange data. So you didn't need the dreamcast itself to copy the saved games.
