The SEGA Multi-Mega is a portable system that combined the MegaDrive and MegaCD. The launch price for the Multi-Mega was £350.00! Although it had no built-in screen to play games on the move it could double as a portable CD player and was powered by 2 AA batteries that only had enough power to run the CD player. To play Megadrive and Mega CD games the Multimega had to be plugged into the mains. The portable CD control buttons are on the front of the console (play, stop, Etc.) and a small backlit L.C.D displayed the track number. An extra line out port was provided for connection to stereo equipment. It was also possible for a Multimega to be connected to a 32X although this set up did not allow you to play 32X CD's as the disc drive lid was blocked by the 32X unit. The Multimega was known as the CDX in America.
The Multi-Mega system is very rare. One site claims that only 10 systems were imported to Finland; whereas another site claims only 1000 units exists in Europe. In fact I got my Multi-Mega system by coincidence. I was the highest bidder in an auction with the description "MegaDrive/Mega-CD". I was hoping that the object contained a Mega-CD model 1 unit (with frontloader); but instead it turned out to be a Multi-Mega system. Lucky me ;-)
